DO’s AND DON’Ts IN TCS ILP!

Okay, I’ve been getting so many queries on what is allowed and what is not allowed, that I finally decided to write a post on it! 😀

DON’TS IN OFFICE

1) DO NOT take pen drives, CDs, laptops, cameras or any other mass storage device to the office. You can keep them in your room.

2) DO NOT take photos with your phone inside the office. Taking photos is strictly prohibited.

3) DO NOT be late for any session or presentation. Some leads are very strict and may not allow you to attend that session.

4) For guys who smoke, use the breaks and go to the proper area where smoking is allowed.

5) DO NOT use your phone frequently because many ILP centers don’t allow the usage of phones inside the office. If it is allowed in small amounts, make sure you maintain your phone etiquette by using the breaks to make a call,  moving to a corner and speaking in a low tone. Other than that, calling up your friend to come to class, sending an SMS in class, playing games and checking your Facebook  is totally allowed, provided that you don’t get caught! 🙂

6) DO NOT chew gums and throw them here and there. It’ll be bad if you are caught chewing gums 😦 If you really have to chew something, do it at your own risk! 🙂

7) DO NOT take food items to office. In Trivandrum, sometimes, chocolates and biscuits weren’t even allowed. But, if you can take them through, you can eat them in the small breaks. Or, you can eat in class! Again, don’t get caught! 😀

8) DO NOT waste your coffee breaks and big break. You get them after long hours. Freshen yourself up in these 15 or 30 minutes!

9) DO NOT wander off in the middle of lab sessions. If you need to drink water (coz guys don’t usually carry water) or wash your face (coz girls usually do that), ask your lead or let the person beside you know that. That way, if you are not in your seat, people will know that you didn’t ditch that session. I remember running off 5-10 minutes before the end of lab session, so that I don’t get into a long queue during the big break!  Of course, don’t do this if your lead is around! 😀

10)  DO NOT dress improperly throughout the week. Read my post on grooming at- BASIC GROOMING AND ETIQUETTE.

11) DO NOT use offensive language, direct/indirect insults, swearing and criticism. It will be bad for your rating and people will give bad feedback about you and know you as someone having an attitude problem. If you’re heard by any lead or supervisor, it can cost you your job. So, keep it all outside the office! 🙂 Discussing about how your lead is teaching JAVA is totally normal but, keep it low! You have feedback sessions for that!

12) DO NOT indulge in any destructive activities like breaking  and damaging things. That is the last thing TCS expects from you. Do not run about and behave like children. Remember, be in your very best behaviour, always! 🙂

13) DO NOT violate TCS Information Security policies. You’ll get to know them once you join ILP. Lock your system when you aren’t around, Log off when not using it, do not use the Internet for personal uses except during free time.  Most sites like Facebook, YouTube, Gmail etc. will be blocked. Don’t try any other pathways as the iSecurity team constantly monitors your surfing history. You can take a dongle and surf the net in your hostel.

DON’TS IN HOSTEL

1) DO NOT bring electrical appliances (except laptop and phone charger) to the hostel if it is not allowed! If you can manage to go past the luggage X-Ray (it’s there in many places), then  you’re fine! Just don’t have it lying around on your desk! Wash your clothes and avail the laundry services! 🙂

2) DO NOT take food items to your rooms if it is not allowed. There’s a separate room for keeping your food. You can also sneak past the guard and bring some food into your room! Don’t get caught! 😀

3) DO NOT cross hostel timings if your hostel has rules about being closed at a certain time. If you are late, you better have a valid reason. If you are going to be late or won’t come back for the night, let the hostel authorities know that. If your hostel has rules about ‘can’t stay outside after 10 or overnight’, follow it! Exception is that, a group of people go for a tour somewhere!

4) DO NOT DRINK or come back drunk! There have been cases everywhere! For both girls and guys! Give it a rest for these 3 months. If you have to drink, be in control OR stay outside for the night at some hotel and return early in the morning with some excuse. Such actions will not only make your reputation bad but can also get your job terminated. You wouldn’t want your parents to know that now, would you?

5) Girls, please DO NOT wear skimpy clothes and go out, especially if the place isn’t safe or it isn’t very modernized. You don’t want to draw any unwanted attention or comments. DO NOT venture out alone after dark, on your own. Be with a group with at least one guy in it. Even if that means, you want to have dinner outside! Guys, please accompany them whenever needed!

6) DO NOT miss  the  TCS bus, if your hostel is far away from the office. Know the bus timings and be punctual! If you miss it, it’s up to you to reach office on time!

7) DO NOT behave rudely with the hostel authorities, guards or maids! You’re gone if they report you! If you are facing a problem, talk to the hostel authorities and do something about it. If the problem is not solved, contact your ILP center’s accommodation administrator!

Example: One of the lodges that my friends were staying in had bad water supply. They complained to the manager but he didn’t do anything about it. They complained to the administrator in office the next day and he went to check out what the matter is! If the problem is genuine, he’ll do something about it!

That’s it! 😀 Follow the rules and don’t do something else other than extraordinary! 😀

  1. hi zim…thanks 4 such a wonderful blog..was very informative…i gt jl nd ilp date…nw scared like anything ..plz do post some information abt communication classes held n ilp….plz do reply.thanks in advance..

    • Thanks for visiting my blog! Don’t be scared! ILP is fun and easy if you are a smart and dedicated learner. Communication classes are fun in ILP. It starts with introducing yourself in front of everyone, learning TCS values, pre-diagnostics to evaluate your speaking and writing skills. In between, you’ll come to know about Team skills, telephone etiquette, dressing, speaking, listening, writing, dining etiquette etc. The sessions are very interactive and will be filled with activities like role-plays and skits. At the end of ILP, you’ll have the post-diagnostics on speaking (project presentation) and writing (on a topic). That’s it! 🙂

  2. hi Zim….i gt my joinn in HYD on 11dec..
    I wanted to ask if-
    1) we can reach 2 days prior to the DOJ there and still avail accomodation?
    2) Does reaching early give us option of choosing our room-mates..??

  3. Hi Zim….i wanted to know if –
    1) We can choose our room-mates in hostel?
    2) Is our post-ilp location already decided or depends on the training on the domain we undergo during ilp?
    Please reply…:)

    • Usually, they allocate on FCFS basis but you can request them 😀 the earlier you go, the better! post-ILP location is already decided by TCS keeping your choices in mind! Your location will be shared with you shortly after the PAT exam! Relax as none of that decides your post-ILP location! 🙂

  4. Hi…m joining trivandrum ilp on 17th december…may i know what all holidays wud we get there except saturdays and sundays..like for new years eve or 1st jan…also i want to come to my parents place for new year…will the hostel authorities allow me to travel on weekend???? TCS peepul park accomodation or executive hostel outside….who r more strict in following deadlines and rules and regulations….ur advise wud be of great help…thanks in advance…

    • You will not get any holidays except for 25th December, I think. You can travel in the weekends but don’t make it too often. Peepul park is far more strict than any other place!

  5. Hi….ur blog is really helpful….i m joining trivandrum ilp in december…so i want to know a bit more about the girls accomodation there….will i be allowed to travel on weekends to my parents or relatives place…r the hostel authorities(both peepul park and tcs executive hostel) really very strict in following deadlines and rules and regulations?????? ur reply is eagerly awaited…. thanks in advance….

    • It depends on where you get your accommodation. If you get Peepul Park, the authorities are a bit strict. If you get Executive hostel or any lodge, then you’re fine to do anything! 🙂 If you get Peepul Park, you can travel in the weekends but you have to write that in the record!

  6. Hey Zim! you wrote such an informative and helpful blog. Actually i just got my offer letter from TCS so i was very curious to know about ILP and other stuff. I read your whole blog and my almost all the questions got answered. But still one is left. can you please tell me about the different streams that we get other than “java stream”?

      • hey zim! thank you for replying. I want to know why TCS doesn’t provide 6 months industrial training? our last semester is the industrial training and after getting placed in TCS i again have to search for the companies for the training purpose. Could you pls help me in this?

  7. Hey… nice blog.. and beautifully written…
Is there any facilities like Gym etc at tvm-training center?
if so do trainees living outside campus have access to it or only ppl living inside have those facilities?
    Thanx.. and keep writing 🙂

    • no…everything is random and predefined. Pre-ILP is to keep you busy, give you an idea of what you’re about to encounter during ILP. So, you should take full advantage of Aspire! It will be useful, trust me! If you want to get a stream of your choice, you need a certification. For eg. for Java, you need to have an SCJP/OCJP certification.

  8. Hey Zim,thanks for writing such an informative blog :),I have one doubt .If I don’t have Java certification but I have learned many good java technologies like spring, hibernate by myself then will chances of me getting Java increase?

  9. hello zim.
a very good and nicely written blog. i hav joining on 27-03 in Trivandram.plz tell me food and some Ayurvedic medicines are allowed in hostel r nt??and wat r medical DISES TCS can terminate any one after giving joining letter?????

    • Medicines are allowed. Food has to be kept in a separate room. But that’s only for Peepul Park Girls Hostel. Unless you are absolutely not able to work, TCS doesn’t terminate you.

    • On joining, you’ll have PAT. After the learning process has started, there’ll be diagnostics for every new thing that you learn. Vivas, written tests and machine tests are very common. The rate at which you are evaluated also depends on your ILP center.

  10. Hi Zim..
Can u please tell me about what happens if a trainee is sent to remedial when he ant pass a test? I have some problem regarding stage fear..so I am very much worried about Biz Skill class..What actually happens in that class..how can I overcome ths? my questions are bit silly but i am asking just for being safe and mentally prepared bfore joining..:)

    • You aren’t the only one, my friend. ILP is there to teach you and help you overcome stage fear and all. Trust me, when I joined, many people had that, including myself. We all became confident as you have to give too many presentations and you’ll have many sessions on this. Btw, no one really gets Remedial in Biz. skills. Usually, the Biz. lead helps you out with your problem.

  11. hey ur blog has solved max. of my doubts .. thnx 🙂 bt 1 doubt z still remaining 😀 os the PAT only on DBMS, UNIX , and JAVA? if not wat r d othr modules?

  12. Hello Zim you’re putting a lot work here 🙂 Thankieee for that first dude 🙂 🙂
My query is tat I wanna know the package structure clearly fa both ILP and aft tat period…
Most of them threatening me about t zim :(… And i have selected jus 4 months b4, so wen wil i get Call letter actually?

    • You will get 17-18k during ILP. You’ll get less if TCS is providing accommodation. After ILP, your salary will range from 20k to 22k till you finish your anniversary, where you’ll get a hike. Your joining letter may come anywhere after 3-4 months after you pass out. Don’t worry. Just chill! 😀

    • there are many levels of appraisal. I had my first anniversary in December and I think I’ll get a hike of 1500 or something. It is yet to come. I’ll know exactly next month.

  13. hi.i have a question for you.One of my friend and me got placed in tcs.He get a posting in kolkata and i get a posting in chennai. We are given joining dates in March 2013.But my friend do not want to join tcs,he has already joined accenture. Is there any way that i can replace my posting location with the posting location of my friend? We are both from same college, same deptt and same year of passing. If i can, then please tell me the procedure in details.

  14. Bravo.! Cant expect better than this. I myself wrote Blogs, but you have presented the whole scenario amazingly. My joining is on 27th, march 2013. So, I also have some doubts.
    1. Really curious to know about the rooms where we’ll be staying for first 3 months.
    2. Please say that the food in mess is awesome.? Eh.?
    3. What if I have prior experience as a Software developer.
    4. I heard we’ll be getting about 17-18K(with accomodation).? True.? Does it vary with the City, like in mumbai or hyderabaad.?
    5. Does Aspire really matters.?

    • 1) Your accommodation depends on the location. You might get lodges/hotels or you might get TCS hostels (if in Trivandrum) and even apartments to share.
      2) Food again depends on the location. Food can’t be as great as home! 😉
      3) If you have prior experience, you’ll be treated the same way as other freshers. Only you’ll solve things faster and possibly get a higher rating! 😛
      4) With accommodation, you’ll get 13k as 3k gets deducted from HRA! I don’t know if it varies but ours was 3k in TVM.
      5) Aspire matters..to help you prepare well for the coming months!

Hope that cleared your doubts! 😛

  15. Hey Zim, v informative piece, I hv an issue, my joining is on 28th Feb, trivandrum and there is a v imp wedding in my family just on d 7th march, is it possible to get a leave from office for 2 days and from hostel for 4 days right in the 2nd week? Plz help, i really need to be home.

    • If you have peepul park, you have to use a strategy to get food into your room. First of all, keep food in the pantry room. The guard will direct you to it. Later when he’s busy, take the food and sneak past the back way! 😛

  16. Hi Zim.. It’s a nice and helpful blog.. I’ll be joining TCS trivandrum on march 27..I’m going from kolkata.. so I want to know whether they will provide us with pillow, bedsheets and all these stuffs.. And if I carry some food in my luggage then is it allowed to keep in the room allotted..

    • Since you are not going to stay in Peepul Park hostel, you may rest peacefully regarding all these issues! 🙂 Just take a bedsheet with you.

  17. hi…according to tcs college grades my college is a C grade college…so when i can expect my JL to come ?? and also how many days prior to the date of joining the JL is dispatched ??

  18. Hi zim… i have a silly question but plse reply.. how to get a sim card there in trivandrum? means what documnts are needed? as i m from diff state so i heard its strict to get a sim crd there..pls reply

    • Good question. There is a phone shop down the road before or after Delhi Durbar (I don’t remember before or after), but while you walk, it should come. A small store. Just walk out of the campus, go right, cross the road, walk straight and take a right. You’ll get the shop in this road. A passport is the safest document you can provide to get a sim! Try Idea or Airtel as Docomo connection sucks here!

  19. hi.. ur blog is really informative 🙂 my training location is TVM, could u plz tel me what shuld i carry the basic necessary things in detail along with me to the accomodation? thanks in advance…..

  20. zim , u r doing great job. so thanks

actually my communication is not too goot. but can you please inform me that what exacty they cover in communication skills so i can prepare for it. please reply i m very afraid for it

    • Don’t worry! They start from the very basics. Read newspapers, listen to news and that’s the best way to improve communication skills.

  21. Hey its really a nice blog!
I just want to ask which office of TCS ( Hyderabad or TVM ) will be better for ILP?

  22. Hello, I have been selected for TCS and my ILP starts from 4th July in chennai. Im a non CS Student and hence am a bit apprehensive of the entire program. Will I be able to cope up with others? what else should I do to be at par with CS ppl?

    • Just have the confidence and the intense ability to learn. Do not shy away from asking doubts and taking help. You need to walk the extra mile but it’s not impossible.

  23. hey!!! Which mobile operator is best for the data / internet access?? Can we get a new connection there easily or is it better to get it from our place???
    Thanks in advance!! 🙂

  24. Hey.. I am going to start my ILP in september and I was wondering if I could join ILP with my matriculation pass certificate and immigration certificate.. I misplaced my matriculation mark sheet and since my school is on summer break I can only get a duplicate after ILP commences. Would that be fine?

  25. Hey Zim.. What will they ask for mechanical students in ILP. Right now I completed my c++, java courses, should i want to go for any other courses??
